Josh Engel is an up-and-coming producer and bassist from Los Angeles, CA. Known by his peers as Wing Zero, Engel stacks moving bass parts, lush synths, and hip-hop grooves to make atmospheric, space music that is uniquely his own. An in-demand bassist and producer, Wing Zero has shared the stage and studio with artists like Jhene Aiko, Black Eyed Peas, SiR, D-Smoke, Tiffany Gouche, and Kajo. He is also co-leader of electronic soul/future beats collective, Endless Waltz, whose 2018 debut album Black Holes in the Light was met with much critical acclaim.
Engel was inspired to start making his own music after a trip to Japan that changed his view on life and music.
“Japan was such a special place,” Engel shares. “Laying in bed the second night when we were there, I realized that I had become my own artist and I decided to put out music that was completely my own. It really put a lot of things into perspective.”
Engel’s newest EP titled “Void” details the journey of the mental struggles that go with going through health problems. Over the last couple of years, Wing Zero has dealt with multiple healths issues that that made him question if he could go on making and playing music. The first being skin cancer on his picking hand and the second being a bad ear infection that left him with tinnitus. “The cancer was really weird and scary because it came out of nowhere and happened to be in an unfortunate spot.” Engel had two surgeries and went through 10 rounds of radiation to beat the cancer. The tinnitus was even harder to deal with than the cancer. “You can not get away from it...it
just dominates your thoughts because it is literally in your head. It got really dark for a while. It took about a year for me to accept it and not let it ruin my life.” Wing Zero worked on music that made it onto “Void” but didn’t really go out and see or play other music for that whole year.
On “Void” Wing Zero welcomes several newcomers to help shape the sound of the EP. Gracie Sprout on harp, Julian Le on piano, and Eddie Brown on synth all add beautiful textures to the world that Wing Zero is creating. Engel also incorporates the uses of different pedals on his 6 string bass to coax out different flavors that would not have been there before. Another first for this EP is that Wing Zero mixed and mastered it all himself (and with the guidance from some very helpful friends.)
